Minutes of Meeting held: April 28, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. War Memorial Center - Room 413
Welcome & Attendance: _14_ delegates, _5_ alternates present.
All other members excused or accounted for.
Guests & Guest Speakers: Dave Drent reported that July 3rd tickets
will go on sale May 19, 2008.
The HVAC is currently being replaced.
The War Memorial received 50th anniversary accolades at the Historical
Society dinner.
He said we need a picture of Joe Campbell for the wall.
He also reported that Memorial Day activities will be coordinated
with the War Memorial Center.
Joe Campbell offered to coordinate the flyover with Dave Drent.
Dave Drent also reported that
the Purple Heat Memorial should be here for Memorial Day activities.
Dan Keegan, the new Art Museum Director, was introduced. He reviewed
his background and
also said he fully supports us and wants to work with us.
Minutes of March 31. 2008 Meeting: A motion was made by Ron Laux,
seconded by Jim Anderson,
to approve the minutes as printed. Motion carried.
Members of Family in distress: Bill Stys reported his wife, Kitty,
was back in the hospital.
They can't seem to get a handle on her condition.
Correspondence: Greg Jacobs read a thank you letter from the Memorial
Day Parade Committee thanking
us for our contribution to the parade. He also read a letter from
Alderman Bob Donovan to Police Chief Ed Flynn
asking Chief Flynn to reconsider the Police Band's participation
in the 2008 Memorial Day Parade.
Greg Jacobs read a letter from John Hansen, DAV, resigning as alternate effective April 30, 2008.
However, he requested that he be kept on the mailing list. He will be listed as an Ex-Officio.
AI Actkinson's mail has been returned "unable to forward". Sandi
Jenkins will contact
Cudworth Post to see if they have a current address.
Treasurer's Report: Robert Bolz - Excused. Greg Jacobs read the report
from Mr. Bolz. Motion made by
Jim Anderson, seconded by Leonard Erdmann, to approve the treasurer's
report subject to audit. Motion carried.
Committee Reports:
I. Executive: Greg Jacobs - No report
II. Awards: Paul Bialk reported he is working up some pictures of
the War Memorial for Board
members that have served for more than a year - Stan Kogutkiewicz,
Jim Duff, Lisa Phillips, leon Zalewski, and Don Schambureck.
III. Audit: Jim Anderson - No report
IV. Budget & Finance: Robert Bolz - Excused
V. Constitution & By-laws: louis Goodstein - No report
VI. Public Relations/Publicity: Lisa Phillips - Excused.
Gwen Sheppard reported the flyers have been faxed to the media.

VIII. legislative Committee: leonard Erdmann - No report
IX. Memorial Day Committee: Bill Stys reported all is set for the
parade. Have received the permits.
Currently checking on the reviewing stand; working with COl Mitten
at the 128th.
X. Americanism Awards Breakfast Committee: Ron laux reported the
breakfast will be held on
October 26, 2008, and the room is confirmed. We would like 2 awards
from each organization.
XI. Veterans' Day Banquet/Program Committee: Marine Corps League
-
Paul Bialk reported the speaker will be a female LTC from the Marine
Corps. Cost will be
the same as last year. He is working with a group of Polish Dancers
as entertainment.
XII. 3rd of July Committee: Robert Bulgrin reported he will have a sign up sheet next month for volunteers.
Unfinished Business: Greg Jacobs reported that letters were sent
to Governor Doyle with copies to several
others regarding the Extreme Sports facility being proposed at Miller
Park. Greg received a call from
Governor Doyle's Veteran's liaison who was very noncommittal and
suggested we take up our opposition with
Mr. Greenberg. He asked if she could give us a response in writing,
but again was noncommittal. He asked
if she or Governor Doyle would attend one of our meetings to discuss
with the Board. Again she was noncommittal.
Greg Jacobs encouraged all organizations to send letters.
Paul Bialk expressed there is no decent place to put the Extreme
Sports facility without interfering with the
VA land. Greg Jacobs said the City of Milwaukee is still interested
in
developing VA land. Washington, D.C. is also considering.
New Business: Greg Jacobs read a letter he is proposing to send to
Claude Hutchinson, Director, Office of asset
Enterprise Management, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in Washington,
D.C., expressing Veterans
support of the Soldiers Home Foundation's restoration project, and
the reopening of the 1889 Home Chapel
(Building 12), at the VA Medical Center. Joe Campbell moved the
letter to Claude Hutchinson, supporting
the efforts of the Soldiers Home Foundation restoration project,
be sent on behalf of the Veterans'
Board of Directors; seconded by Bill Stys. After some discussion,
motion was carried.
Leon Zalewski moved that a letter be sent to the organization that
replaced the plasma
TV at the VA; seconded by Joe Campbell. Motion carried.
Joe Campbell reported on the retreat for the Families of the Fallen
held in Appleton, WI. It was very helpful
for all, and the City of Appleton was very hospitable. Kids were
bused to rides and entertainment. An
anonymous donor gave each kid (ages 4 to 18) a $100 gift certificate
for the Mall to buy anything they wanted.
They thanked us for sponsoring 2 families to the event.
Greg Jacobs distributed the applications for State Fair. Central
Mall space is limited.
All motorized vehicles must have proof of insurance.
Jim Duff reported that a funeral will be held for Steven Kristofferson
at Cudahy High School on April 30th and
May 151. Kristofferson was a soldier with the 10151 who was killed
in Iraq.
The 10151 can trace its roots back to Wisconsin.
Dave Drent reported that May 17 there will be a Support Our Troops
drive at the War Memorial.
The VA is also having an event at Veterans' Park .. ~
Jim Duff reported that the CVSO office has flags for Memorial Day
and they can be picked up during the day.
Stan Kogutkiewicz said the Supermarket is sponsored by DAV and will
be the largest ever.
Jim Duff reported July 6 is Freedom Day at the Zoo. There will be a Veterans Supermarket at the Tech Center.
Jim Duff reported that May 30 and June 1 is Reclaiming Our Heritage
at the VA grounds. Information was distributed
on Segways for Veterans. As of April 17, they had not received any
applications from Wisconsin.
Good of the Order: Naomi Horwitz reported that the Veterans' Day
Parade got a call from St. John's and now
they want to be in the parade, however, the parade will not pay
for the buses this year.
Jim Anderson asked Dave Drent about the handicapped button on the
north door not working.
Dave said it is turned off at certain times.
Greg Jacobs discussed the date of our September meeting falls the
on the eve of Rosh Hashanah.
Joe Campbell moved that we meet on September 22, 2008, instead of
the eve of
Rosh Hashanah; seconded by Lou Goodstein. Motion carried.
